Bringing the Dead Sea to Life

Bringing the Dead Sea to Life - Art and Nature on the Lowest Place on Earth
₪ 371.45 incl tax

Being the lowest place on earth, the Dead Sea is undeniably unique. With one of the highest ratios of salinity of any body of water, it is a terminal lake, having no outlet other than evaporation. The cultural, biblical, anthropological, and ecological signi cance of the area is truly astonishing. The Dead Sea Basin is home to species found nowhere else in the world and serves as an essential rest stop for migratory birds. The hot climate, the mineral-rich waters, and the black mud, attract hordes of tourists seeking recreation or relief from ailments in Israel, the Palestinian Authority, and Jordan. This book portrays the Dead Sea’s distinctive beauty through the sensitive eyes of artists, examines some causes for its rapid shrinkage, and o ers a few solutions - hopefully to help prevent this enigmatic natural wonder from vanishing altogether.

In March 2017, an intensive eleven-day Artists for Nature Foundation (ANF) seminar was held, in which 23 international and local artists and musicians participated. This book showcases some of their stunning creations, and visually displays the fascinating story of the Dead Sea - its rich natural and human history - as it tragically disappears before our very eyes. The Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel (SPNI) and the Hoopoe Foundation joined the Artists for Nature Foundation (ANF) to bring these artists to Israel and Jordan. These extraordinary men and women, armed with pencils, paintbrushes, and palettes, trekked through wadis at the crack of dawn. The artists sketched and painted outdoors (plein air), capturing the spectacular essence of the Dead Sea area - from bold-stroked landscapes to detailed depictions of ora and fauna. They also taught busloads of eager Jordanian, Palestinian, and Israeli pupils about art, nature, and this region’s magni cent topography and fragile biodiversity.
